Description

W. Eugene Smith photographed this woman, perhaps a nun, beneath the Lorenzo Lopez Chapel on Cerro Gordo Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico and is part of his "New Mexico Series". It has been a subject for numerous photographers through the years. Smith did this in 1947. The woman is unknown.

The private chapel, 'La Capilla de San Isidro Labrador" was built by Don Lorenzo Lopez between 1928 and 1931 from local boulders, which he formed with a pick ax. The chapel overlooks the Santa Fe River. Lopez was 65 years old when he completed the monument.
