Description

"Morning in Yosemite" was done in 1938 using pure aquatint. Doolittle printed an initial printing of 91 impressions in January of 1938. On June 17, 1947, he printed an additional 18 impressions after which he cancelled the plate. In his notebook, he wrote "Probably my best. HLD".

"Three Brothers" is a granite rock formation in Yosemite National Park in California. It is located just east of El Capitan and consists of Eagle Peak (the uppermost "brother"), and Middle and Lower Brothers, which are depicted in this composition, Eagle Peak is hidden in the background from this perspective.

Members of the Mariposa Battalion, a California militia group founded in 1851 to battle the indigenous Yosemites and Chowchilla tribes, named the Three Brothers after the capture of the three sons of Chief Tenaya near the base of the Three Brothers
