Description
From the collection of Danish critic and author Georg Bröchner, who wrote for the British art magazine "The Studio" in the early 20th century. Dagmar Olrik was a Danish textile artist credited with reviving her country's interest in the art of tapestry. She is best known for taking on the monumental project commissioned by the city of Copenhagen to create a series of tapestries honoring Danish artist Lorenz Frolich - in all, an 18-year task. Here, she has painted a small, dainty floral wreath of oak leaves and acorns, which, upon closer inspection, features vertical lines that suggest the texture made by tapestry threads. Before she discovered weaving, Olrik was trained in painting by her father, noted Danish portraitist Henrik Olrik. After her death in 1932 Dagmar Olrik left behind a legacy in the many students, workshops, and schools dedicated to the art of tapestry.
