Description

Samuel Chamberlain used a combination of etching and mezzotint to create this atmospheric composition of the Manhattan skyline at twilight. The sunlight fades behind the clouded skies and the lights of the city become distinct. This image is one of only two night pieces he finished.

One of Chamberlain's best known and most complicated intaglios, he did nine different states before printing the published edition of 100. The catalog raisonné comments about this work:

"The working proofs are noted in the artist's records as follows: a first state of two proofs, a second state of a single proof, a third state of two proofs, fourth and fifth states of a single proof each, sixth and seventh (this impression) of two proofs each, an eighth state of a single proof, and a ninth state of two proofs. The plate presumably was left in France and destroyed during World War II."
