Description

Another Max Pollak color intaglio of his adopted hometown of Vienna, Austria. done around 1920 he has the viewer on a hill in the Kagan district of Vienna. Below is a winter scene, mostly snow with patches of architectural elements and branches to the right.

The setting is probably the frozen "Alte Donau" an old offshoot bay of the Danube, seen in the distance, on which a wind-sail sled travels. In the foreground, a group of children is out on the ice. One has a sled, two others are making "snow angels" and two appear to be wrestling - winter play that any who have grown up with freezing winters are familiar with.

Pollak adds bits of aquatint, colored a la poupeƩ throughout the composition; the boats stacked on their sides in the foreground and the shack to the left, the jackets of the children and colorful homes and outbuildings in the distance. He is able to create a large landscape with a few, well-placed lines and colors. The branches create a spatial context for the viewer.
