Description

An early use of color intaglio by Czech-born printmaker Max Pollak, who went on to use the technique almost exclusively. "Merry go round (Tsheco-Slovakia)" adds color aquatint, printed a la poupée, to his large drypoint, done in 1915.

The artist focuses on a large black center on the merry-go-round, upon which are drawn a number of loose, sketchy figures which create a sensation of movement. In the foreground stand a number of waiting mothers and children, dressed in local attire.

Max Pollak was born in Czechoslavakia and raised in Vienna. A printmaker with a long, productive career his intaglios, which included genre, land and cityscapes, and portraits from throughout Europe, the United States and Latin America.
