Description

Max Pollak did this color aquatint and etching around 1934 and chose as his subject his adopted home, San Francisco, California, viewed from the top of the hill on California Street. The viewer's eye is directed down the hill, past the pagoda of the Sing Fat Company building at Grant Avenue to the Ferry Building at the end, located on San Francisco Bay. Its clock-tower is seen in the upper center of the composition.

In the background is the partly completed San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, which was started in 1933 and opened in 1935. It is a series of bridges that connects San Francisco with the East Bay. It opened traffic and opportunities for the residents, lessening the stress on the ferry system.

The Golden Gate Bridge, which connected San Francisco with Northern California, was also begun in 1933 and opened in 1937.
