This simple, expressive line drawing in ink by Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957) was done in 1946 and was included in the book "Mexico South". It was the 26th of 100 unique drawings done for the special publication.
The subject is a sugar cane worker, a cutter, taking a break, with his leg up on a plane as he smokes a cigarette. Over his left shoulder he carries the tool of his trade, a machete.
These cane workers are currently in the midst of health and labor concerns as well as the industry being affected by climate change.
