A rare, unique color woodengraving by San Francisco printmaker Meta Hendel. Hendel applies oil based color to the block that is printed as a thick, deep color, not unlike an oil painting.
This is a view from the Twin Peaks area overlooking San Francisco. The Bay Bridge is seen in the right center of the composition. Because of her printing techniques each impression will vary in color. She did not edition her prints. This impression was originally signed and titled on the mat, the title still exists but the signature was lost by a previous owner.
Meta Hendel, painter and printmaker, was born in Berlin, Germay. She was educated there and in Paris, studying with Fernand Leger and Amedee Ozenfant. During the 1930's she immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. She gave private art lessons and was also an instructor with the San Francisco Adult Education.
