Description

Lawrence Patterson did this image based on a verse of a poem by mystic poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907) titled 'The Hound of Heaven.' In the lower margin Patterson wrote out the verse in pencil: "To all swift things for swiftness did I sue / Clung to the whistling mane of every wind."

Lawrence Anthony Patterson was born in Fresno, California on March 24, 1896. He studied art in San Francisco at the California School of Fine Arts and then in Mexico City. He returned to San Francisco in the early 1920's and was active in the local art scene and became interested in printmaking and book illustration.

Patterson worked with the printer Lawton Kennedy (1900-1980) who was printing professionally by age 17. (Kennedy printed many works for Wayne Thiebaud at Crown Point Press in 1965). In 1932 Patterson moved to San Mateo, California where he taught art for 30 years at the San Mateo Junior College. Patterson died in San Mateo on November 3, 1964.
