Description

Little is known about Kate Barrie. She was born in Oregon on Aug. 5, 1888. By the 1930s Barrie had settled in Los Angeles. She died there on Sept. 22, 1973.

To achieve this image the artist drew out the linear work in India ink on the verso of the onion skin paper. She toned the recto with a golden brown background and then colored the stallion and the figure, allowing the black lines to show through. In the upper right corner a slight red cartouche shows through.

An Asian man attempts to put a bridle on a large, wild stallion that is saddled. The rein appears to have broken off and is in the left hand of the trainer.
