Description
Chicago printmakers Roland Ginzel and Ellen Lanyon got their MFA degrees at the University of Iowa in 1951. Ginzel and Lanyon founded the Graphic Art Workshop in Chicago, which closed in 1956. One of the Chicago areas early abstract printmakers Ginzel has referred to his work with phrases like "lyrical formalism" and "soft geometry," suggesting a poetic use of abstract forms and a connection to Surrealism, respectively. This large, gestural lithograph in blacks and grays certainly work within those descriptions.
