Description
American artist Minerva Josephine Chapman was born in Altmar, NY in 1858. When she did this intense self portrait she was studying at Academie Julian in Paris. The dark lines of this drawing have created a three dimensional pattern on the verso of the sheet. In 1906 she was one of the first American women elected a member of France's Salon of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts. Chapman died in Palo Alto, CA in 1947.
