Description

This lithograph is a depiction of a major goal for Chili, Matta's homeland, and follows the ball into the net as the public celebrates. It is roughly based on his mural "The First Goal of the Chilean People" painted in support of Allende in 1971-2, who was overthrown by Pinochet in 1973. Pinochet then covered the mural with 16 coats of paint. The mural was restored in 2008 and is on display at the La Granja city hall, outside Santiago.

Matta was born in Chile and trained as an architect, working with Le Corbusier in France in 1933. In 1935 he met Dali in Spain and joined the Surrealists until his departure in 1948. He lived in the United States between 1938 and 1948.

Matta died in 2002 at 92.
