Description

Bill Armstrong did this abstract color woodcut while teaching at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Fellow printmaker Alfred Sessler had begun using the reduction method of of printing at UW Madison and Armstrong began experimenting with the technique and non-objective imagery. This woodcut was done from a single block, printed numerous times.

William (Bill) Howard Armstrong was born in Horton, Kansas on Dec. 13, 1926. He attended the University of Illinois (MA) and Bradley University (BA), teaching at both. Between 1955 and 1963 he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and was Professor Emeritus at Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, MO. He died in Springfield on August 25, 2016.

Armstrong worked as a printmaker, graphic designer and book illustrator throughout his career. He worked as a consultant to the Ford Foundation in the mid 1950's. He has exhibited with the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) and numerous venues throughout the U.S.
