Description
Hugo began his studies in printmaking at Atelier 17 after he had moved to Paris in 1940, probably in the brief interim between Hayter's move from Paris to New York. His career as an artist began late, but became the predomiant focus of his life, first in prints and later in filmmaking. "Toreador" explains the transition: The abstracted figure is in motion, ready to come off the sheet. Hugo's eye for movement and the magic in Surrealism is captured in this engraving.
