Description
Henri Meunier created this color aquatint of the southwest facade of Chartres Catherdral, located southwest of Paris. The architecture is considered to be amongst the finest examples of the French High Gothic style. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and has remained almost completely unchanged with only minor fixes. Meunier was born in Belgium to an artistic family; his father was an etcher and his uncle a sculptor. He learned engraving from his father, becoming a poster artist, bookbinder and printmaker and is best known for his lithographic work done for L'Estampe Moderne. Meunier was influenced by the Japanese aesthetic that was of such interest at the time.
