Description
The birds portrayed in Allen Seaby's color woodcut are game birds in the grouse family. The male and female are commonly referred to by their folk names, Blackcock and Greyhen; names first used in literature by John Ray in 1674. The black grouse is a large game bird and the males have distinctive white wings and a lyre-shaped tail. The females are grayish-brown (hence the name Greyhen) and her distinctive characteristic is her cackling call.
