Claire Falkenstein (1908-1997) studied at Atelier 17 with S.W. Hayter where she learned experimental printmaking. She is highly regarded as a painter/printmaker but is also noted for her metal sculpture and jewelry. She would often "print" both, using the sculpture as the matrix. In this print Falkenstein uses lithographic split-fountain printing for the rainbow colors and collages sculptural elements to a plate and prints the resulting collagraph to emboss the surface of the image. As the viewer gets closer to the image, the subtleties of the scultptural image take form within the rainbow.
