Description

Cleveland artist Herbert Carroll Cassill studied printmaking the State University in Iowa with Mauricio Lasansky, getting his BFA and MA there and teaching with Lasansky between 1953 and 57.

Like many of the post-war artists Cassill had an interest in Surrealism and psychology, exploring the language and meaning of dreams in their imagery. "Apparition of the Other Brother" is such a print, steeped in symbolism and mystery. The study of apparitions has been an important aspect in the study of parapsychology, science and religion.

Cassill etched, engraved and scraped this large plate to reveal outlined figures of children, two of whom appear to be in cages. This impression is a proof from the first state.
