During World War II, Von Wicht served as captain of a supply barge ferrying food to army transport ships in New York harbor. Harbor themes began to appear in his abstract paintings and prints. Harbor is explosive with the energy from Von Wicht’s broad strokes created by using the side of a litho crayon; the whirls of back-and-forth motion of the crayon; the dramatic vertical, diagonal, and horizontal tusche lines; and the gestural splashes of tusche across the stone. Amid this gestural abstraction, the visuals of the harbor are evident: masts, riggings, ships, docks, funnels, and flags.
