Come Detta Dentro Vo Significado plates 18 & 19

Matta used two plates to create this stunning, geometric, surreal study that dances on the surface. Between 1959 and 61 Matta created a portfolio of 22 intaglios, 16 of which were printed in color, with text that he titled "Como Detta Dentro vo Significado." Of the 16 color works 3 were printed double page, such as this impression. These works, done early in Matta's printmaking career, exploit many of the Surrealist ideas that were developed by him while working at Atelier 17 in the 1930s through the 1960s.

The edition was done in various proofs, this impression being from the published edition of 100. It was co-published by Editions Meyer, Lausanne, Switzerland and Galerie Le Point Cardinal.

Chilean born Matta studied at the Atelier 17 in New York after he was exiled from Paris during the acceleration of World War II. He was a formal member of the Surrealists, expelled and then re-invited.
