Description
The Brown Pelican is a comical looking seabird with an exaggerated bill and a large, dark body. It has a thin neck and a very long bill with a stretchy throat pouch. Pelicans fly in groups or squadrons gliding on updrafts along wave faces or cliffs. They plunge into the surf using the force of impact to stun small fish before scooping them up in their large bills. They live along southern and western seacoasts and they nest in colonies on islands. Along the Pacific coast, adult males have red on their throats during the mating season. The Brown Pelican was once on the brink of extinction due to pesticides.
